Emily Fennell, 26, is a hand transplant recipient. UCLA's first hand transplant patient adapting well to new hand. Fennell has recovered from her major operation and is now doing occupational therapy to learn how to use her new right hand.

Emily Fennell lost her own hand in a car accident. Single mother Fennell is in rehab at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, 7 weeks after her surgical hand transplant. Fennell is the first person on the West Coast of the US, to undergo the hand transplant operation.

Fennell received a new hand in a complex, 14-hour surgery at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. During the surgery, doctors attached 23 tendons, two bones, two arteries and a several nerves..
